About Butchertown
Louisville’s original meatpacking district and one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Butchertown was established in the early 1800's when German and Irish immigrants settled in east Downtown Louisville along the original Beargrass Creek. While residents of the neighborhood had many professions, a vast majority were butchers or worked in the industry. Over the years, Butchertown has seen its fair share of colorful historical events that include the major flood of 1937 and "Bloody Monday" riots of August 1855. Once a community that included both residential and industrial aspects, Butchertown had a sharp decline in its residential population after the 1937 flood.
Today, however, the diverse community of Butchertown is in the middle of a renaissance, seeing an influx of restaurants, bars, boutiques, art galleries, breweries, coffee shops, the city’s only brandy distillery, and a state-of-the-art soccer stadium. Residents are relocating to the area and renovating previously neglected grand buildings and homes that date back nearly 200 years.

Butchertown Art Fair
The Butchertown Art Fair is the Butchertown Neighborhood Association's signature event and primary fundraiser. This juried art fair showcases diverse, high-quality artists from the region and beyond. Taking place annually on the first Saturday and Sunday of June, Butchertown Art Fair is uniquely set in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Louisville. With its tree canopy landscape and 1800s homes, the art fair is an opportunity to show off the beauty of the historic neighborhood.
Artists are carefully selected, offering a little bit of everything without feeling repetitive. It’s a true labor of love for the Butchertown Neighborhood Association, who works year around on this event, which provides funds for neighborhood projects, as well annual donations to various neighborhood nonprofits.
The Butchertown Art Fair takes place on the 800 block of E. Washington St. (corner of E. Washington St. & Campbell St.)
